Decorative Concrete. Facts and Myths

Microcement, also known as decorative concrete, has been one of the most fashionable finishing materials of the last decade. It is widely chosen by interior designers, contractors working on modern developments, and enthusiastically embraced by investors.

In this article, we address the questions and doubts most frequently raised with our Customer Service Department regarding the use of microcement in interior design.
Does microcement scratch easily? Is microcement cold? Is it slippery? How much does microcement cost for walls and floors? Is the same microcement used everywhere? What about bathrooms and kitchens?

The list of questions seems endless, which is why we have divided the topic into a series of articles.

As a manufacturer with 30 years of experience, an in-house technology department, and hundreds of completed microcement projects, we know what we are talking about.
We invite you to read on and visit our website, where decorative microcement is discussed in detail.

Is Microcement Expensive?

It depends on how you look at it. The cost of finishing floors or walls with microcement should not be considered solely in terms of the material price, but also in relation to its durability, versatility, and aesthetics.

The total investment cost consists of all components of the microcement system, including:

  • primer,

  • microcement,

  • base coat for varnish,

  • protective lacquer,
as well as the contractor’s labor. The labor cost depends on existing conditions and the time required for proper application. Keep in mind that the more experienced the contractor, the higher the service price.

It is not worth saving money on low-quality microcement. Such “savings” often result in costly repairs in the future. We strongly recommend choosing proven brands that cannot afford to compromise quality for a “promotional price”.

If microcement is meant to be durable and visually appealing for years, it must be based on a formula developed by experienced technologists.

This is the case with CREATIVO ONE Microcement and CREATIVO PRO Microcement, both of which underwent extensive durability testing before being introduced to the market.

Good to know: microcement eliminates the need for grout joints, can be applied to various surfaces, and does not require additional finishing materials such as tiles or skirting boards. As a result, the final cost can be competitive compared to traditional solutions.

Does Microcement Scratch Easily?

It is obvious that with enough effort, almost any surface can be damaged. However, when it comes to normal, even intensive daily use, properly lacquered, high-quality microcement performs exceptionally well.

Chair movement, pet claws, sand brought in from outside, and many other mechanical factors put microcement floors to the test every day. That is why it is essential to:

  • correctly assess the type of space (home, office, corridor, retail area, etc.),

  • choose the appropriate microcement system,

  • protect the surface with a high-quality polyurethane lacquer, such as Baupur 700, or even a ceramic polyurethane lacquer like Baupur 800, which create an exceptionally durable protective barrier.

Within the BAUTECH product range, CREATIVO PRO microcement is designed specifically for areas exposed to very intensive use.

Thanks to its titanium-ceramic structure and the use of dedicated polyurethane lacquers, Bautech CREATIVO PRO microcement offers outstanding durability and abrasion resistance.

For residential interiors, CREATIVO ONE microcement is more than sufficient. Learn more about our microcement systems, and if you have any questions – feel free to contact us.

Can Microcement Be Applied Over Tiles?

Yes, it can – and without removing them! This means significant savings in time, money, and unnecessary mess. Just imagine removing old tiles… better not!

Thanks to its excellent adhesion, microcement can be applied directly over existing ceramic tiles. However, proper surface preparation is essential:

  • mattifying the tiles,

  • priming with a product designed for low-absorbency substrates, such as CONTACTO,

  • leveling the grout lines.

After that, application should follow the manufacturer’s technical guidelines.

Depending on whether microcement is applied on walls or floors, the procedure differs slightly.

Is Microcement Cold?

This is a myth. Microcement is not the same as concrete or marble, which are often associated with a cold feeling. Its temperature depends on the substrate it is applied to.

Moreover, microcement works perfectly with underfloor heating, heating up quickly and retaining warmth for a long time. Under bare feet, it feels comfortable and pleasant to use.
